The Characteristics of Magnetic CVs in the Period Gap
نویسنده
چکیده
We have observed several magnetic cataclysmic variables located in the range between 2 and 3 hours, known as the period gap. This work was prompted by the recent discovery of RXJ1554.2+2721. It has 2.54 hours orbital period and shows almost pure cyclotron continuum in a low luminosity state, similar to HS1023+3900, HS0922+1333 and RBS206. These are low accretion rate polars (LARPs) known to have mass transfer rates of order of a few 10M⊙/year. The aim of the study was to find out, if magnetic systems filling the period gap are in any way different from their counterparts outside that range of periods. The only significant difference we encounter, is much higher number of asynchronous magnetic systems to-wards longer periods than below the gap.

Cataclysmic variable evolution: AM Her binaries and the period gap
AM Her variables – synchronised magnetic cataclysmic variables (CVs) – exhibit a different period distribution from other CVs across the period gap. We show that non-AM Her systems may infiltrate the longer-period end of the period gap if they are metal-deficient, but that the position and width of the gap in orbital period is otherwise insensitive to other binary parameters (excepting the norm...
متن کاملAn Hα-selected sample of cataclysmic variables – II. Implications for CV evolution
We use an independent new sample of cataclysmic variables (CVs), constructed by selecting objects for Hα emission, to constrain the properties of the intrinsic CV population. This sample is restricted to systems that are likely to be non-magnetic and unevolved; it consists of 17 CVs, of which at least 10 have orbital periods above 3 h. We find that even very generous allowance for selection eff...
متن کاملHow Many CVs are Crossing the Period Gap? A Test for the Disruption of Magnetic Braking
We apply population synthesis techniques to calculate the present day number of two types of white dwarf-main sequence star (WDMS) binaries within the cataclysmic variable 2 to 3 hour period gap. The first are post-common envelope binaries with secondary stars that have masses 0.17 ≤ M2/M⊙ ≤ 0.36 (gPCEBs), such that they will commence mass transfer within the period gap. The second type are sys...
متن کاملA Critical Examination of the Paradigm for the 2 - 3 Hour Period Gap in Cataclysmic Variables
We critically examine the basic paradigm for the origin of the 2-3 hr period gap in cataclysmic variables (CVs), i.e., binary systems in which a white dwarf accretes from a relatively unevolved, low-mass donor star. The observed orbital period distribution for ∼ 300 CVs shows that these systems typically have orbital periods, Porb, in the range of ∼ 80 min to ∼ 8 hr, but a distinct dearth of sy...
متن کاملThe age of
Applying standard models for formation and evolution of cataclysmic variables (CVs) we determine the age structure of a model population of Galac-tic CVs. By convolving the obtained CV age distribution with the observed age{space velocity relation of single stars we derive the theoretically expected distribution of {velocities and the dispersion of as a function of orbital period. This dispersi...
